Envisioning the future of digital workforce services for HP

HP, a global leader in personal computing and printing solutions, recognised the need to adapt to the rapidly changing hybrid work environment accelerated by the pandemic. The aim was to create a suite of digital workforce services that cater to the evolving needs of a hybrid workforce, workplace, and workflow. Our team was tasked with envisioning, designing, and implementing these services, leveraging agile methodologies and design thinking principles.

SERVICES DELIVERED

As the Design Lead, I worked closely with a Strategist and a product designer to provided a comprehensive range of services, including, product discovery, client and customer research, customer journey mapping, high-fidelity mockups and prototypes, new design system components and style enhancements, pitch-ready designs, strategy and storytelling.

The project involved collaboration with key HP stakeholders, including senior leadership and representatives from various departments. This partnership was characterised by embedding agile and design thinking principles throughout the process.

CHALLENGE

In the wake of the pandemic, HP recognised a crucial shift in how the workforce operates, with many employees transitioning to hybrid models that blend remote and in-office work. This transformation created new challenges and opportunities, prompting HP to expand its digital workforce services to better support this evolving work environment. The design of these services was not just a response to a temporary need but a strategic move to future-proof HP’s offerings, ensuring they remain relevant and valuable in a rapidly changing landscape.

APPROACH

Our approach involved identifying critical assumptions and validating them through experimentation. We engaged a diverse group of HP team members across the business in co-creation workshops using Miro to gather feedback and ideas. Additionally, we interviewed customers to gain valuable insights and employed continuous iteration to refine our focus areas. Our research led us to concentrate on five key areas: Role based recommendations, Personalised Flexible Subscription, Predictive Analytics, Workflow Optimisation, Anywhere Secure Working, Workflow Optimisation, and OneCloud.

By tailoring subscriptions, optimising performance with real-time data, ensuring smooth onboarding, and enhancing workspace functionality, we aimed to boost productivity and satisfaction. We tested the desirability, usability, and feasibility of each service offering, continuously iterating based on insights and data to ensure alignment with customer needs and expectations.

ROLE BASED RECOMMENDATIONS

Provide hardware managers with specific, relevant recommendations based on the roles and needs of their workforce, ensuring that each employee has the right tools for their job.  The role-based customisation leverages user profiles to deliver custom packages that align with the employee’s job requirements and locations. Simplify the process of selecting and deploying the right hardware and software by presenting clear, concise options that are easy to evaluate. Ensure that the recommended hardware and software packages integrate well with existing systems and workflows, minimising disruption and maximising productivity. Utilise predictive analytics to anticipate future needs and trends, helping managers stay ahead of potential issues and optimise resource allocation.

PERSONALISED SUBSCRIPTION

We designed a recommendation system tailored to the specific roles and needs of the workforce, ensuring each employee receives the optimal tools for their job. The interface leverages user profiles to deliver custom packages aligned with job requirements and locations. This approach simplifies the selection and deployment process by presenting clear, concise options that are easy to evaluate. It ensures that recommended hardware and software integrate seamlessly with existing systems and workflows, minimising disruption and maximising productivity. Predictive analytics anticipate future needs and trends, helping managers stay ahead of potential issues and optimise resource allocation.

ACTIVITY REPORT

The design of the Monthly Activity Report interface for HP’s digital workforce services was created to address the needs of a modern, hybrid workforce.

The proficiency score prominently displayed in the upper right provides a quick snapshot of the user’s performance compared to industry standards. This immediate feedback is crucial for busy professionals who need to understand their standing at a glance.

The design breaks down performance into specific roles like Accounting, Reporting, and Management. This granularity allows users to see where they excel and where there’s room for improvement, tailored to their job functions.

By comparing the user’s performance to industry averages, the design provides context, helping users understand their strengths and areas for development relative to their peers.

PERFORMANCE ANALYTICS

We introduced performance analytics to monitor and assess the health of users’ hardware, providing real-time insights and maintenance recommendations. The solution covers key aspects such as performance, security, reliability, virus prevention, processing power, and WiFi, giving users a comprehensive view of their hardware’s status.

By displaying device health and suggesting care actions, the design encourages proactive maintenance. This approach helps prevent technical issues and extends the lifespan of devices.

PERSONALISED APP RECOMMENDATIONS

By integrating personalised app recommendations, predictive analytics, and secure cloud-based tools, the dashboard enables seamless, efficient, and secure work experiences. Features such as “Apps recommended for you” and “Trending applications” leverage user data to provide tailored solutions, while sections like “Become the expert” focus on continuous learning and workflow optimisation, laying the foundation for future advancements, enhancing productivity and user satisfaction.

CONCLUSION

Our collaboration with HP resulted in a comprehensive suite of services and products that significantly supported their digital workforce transformation. This customer-centric, evidence-based design approach not only inspired HP’s digital strategy but also guided the rollout through iterative processes and continuous feedback loops. This methodology equipped HP with the tools to meet evolving customer needs, positioning them as leaders in a competitive market and driving enhanced productivity and customer satisfaction.
